Current Lab Members
Api Chewcharat
Api grew up in Bangkok, Thailand and graduated with an MD in 2017. He then came to Boston, where he completed an MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in 2019. He completed his internal medicine residency training at Mount Auburn Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He is currently a clinical research fellow in Nephrology at BWH/MGH. He is interested in epidemiology, causal inference, machine learning and onconephrology. Outside of medicine, Api enjoys cooking, playing Nintendo switch, swimming and water-based outdoor activities.
Emma (Qiyu) Wang
Emma grew up in Shanghai, China. She attended Fudan University and received her medical degree from Shanghai Medical College in 2015. She completed internal medicine residency at Cook County hospital in Chicago, followed by nephrology fellowship at the combined Massachusetts General/Brigham and Women’s fellowship program. After graduating from fellowship in 2023, she joined the Renal Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as faculty, with a clinical and research interest in glomerular disease. She is currently co-mentored by Dr. Astrid Weins and Dr. Gupta, conducting multicenter epidemiological studies in glomerulonephritis. She was awarded the GlomCon fellowship for her research in this area. In her free time, she practices wheel kicks at her beloved Taekwondo Dojang and enjoys reading novels.

Marta Pirovano
Marta is from Milan, Italy. She graduated with a degree in Medicine from University of Milan in 2021, and she is currently a Nephrology Resident at the same university. In 2024, she joined the Gupta Lab as a Postdoctoral Research Trainee at BWH/DFCI for 1 year. She plans to pursue a career in onconephrology. In her free time, Marta enjoys reading, skiing (she is a ski instructor), and traveling.
Sophia Wells
Sophia grew up in Akron, Ohio, and graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Population & Public Health from John Carroll University. She joined the Gupta Lab as a Research Coordinator in the Summer of 2022. She plans to pursue a career in medicine. In her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking, and running.
Jessica Ortega
Jessica grew up in Bethel, Connecticut, and graduated in 2023 from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science in Pathobiology and a minor in Molecular Cell Biology. Joining the Gupta Lab as a Research Coordinator in the summer of 2023, she aspires to pursue a career in medicine. Jessica enjoys making ceramics, Latin dancing, and hiking in her free time.
Raphael Kim
Raphael is a PhD candidate in the Department of Biostatistics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and assists part-time with statistical analyses for the Gupta lab. He previously received a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Raphael’s primary research interests are in causal inference in adaptive experiments, with applications to environmental health and policy. In his free time, he loves traveling the world, playing soccer or racquet sports, and hiking to reach beautiful outlooks.
Firas Alikhan
Firas grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Intradisciplinary Psychology in 2019 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently completing the MS in Medical Sciences program at Boston University, with plans to pursue a career in medicine. In June 2024, Firas began work as a Research Intern in the Gupta Lab, where he is also working on completing a research-based thesis project. When he's not working, Firas enjoys being engaged in outdoor activities and loves spending time with family and friends.
Alexa Peterkin
Alexa was born and raised in Bend, Oregon. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Government from Colby College in 2021 and her post-baccalaureate from the University of Virginia in 2022. Currently, she is pursuing her Master’s in Medical Science at Boston University School of Medicine. She joined the Gupta Lab in the summer of 2024 as a Research Trainee while completing her Master’s thesis. Alexa plans on pursuing a career in medicine as a physician. Outside of academics and work, Alexa loves to play rugby, train jiu-jitsu, and cook for friends and family.
Carolina Saldanha Neves Horta Lima
Carolina was born in Brasília, Brazil, where she earned her MD degree at the University of Brasília. She later trained in Internal Medicine at University of São Paulo, Brazil where she later was chief resident. She is currently an Internal Medicine resident at Mass General Brigham Salem Hospital. She is very passionate about medical education and aspires to pursue a career in nephrology. Outside of medicine, she loves traveling, reading, long distance running and working out.

Olivia Green-Lingren
Olivia grew up on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. She graduated from Emory University in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience & Behavioral Biology and received her Master of Science in Medical Sciences from Boston University School of Medicine in May 2024. She plans to pursue a career in medicine. She enjoys going to concerts, crocheting, and reading in her free time.
Shreya Rao
Shreya is from Long Island, NY. She graduated in 2023 from Georgetown University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management & Policy with a concentration in Administration. Shreya joined the lab in the Summer of 2023. She wishes to pursue a medical career in the near future, and some of her hobbies include going to the beach, reading, writing, and long-distance running.
Kevin Lee Chen
Kevin is a PhD candidate in the Department of Biostatistics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and assists part-time with statistical analyses for the Gupta lab. He received a B.S. in Statistics and Analytics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an A.M. in Biostatistics from Harvard University. Kevin’s primary research interests are in causal inference in interference settings, with applications to environmental health and policy. In his spare time, he’s a big college basketball and hockey fan.
Nishant Devaraj
Nishant grew up in Houston, Texas, and graduated in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology from Boston University. He joined the Gupta lab for the 2022-2023 academic year as a Research Assistant. He intends to join the medical field in the near future, continuing on his journey to become a surgeon. In his free time, Nishant enjoys sports, reading, and working out.
Lea Feghali
Lea is from Beirut, Lebanon. She did her Family Medicine residency at the American University of Beirut Medical Center and joined the lab in 2022 as a postdoctoral research trainee. She is completing her residency training in Family Medicine in the States for the coming years at Indiana University School of Medicine. Outside of the field, Lea enjoys music, plays the bass guitar, and loves outdoor activities.
Robert Seitter
Robert grew up in Miami, Florida and completed his masters at the BU MAMS program. He completed his internship with the lab during the 2021-2022 academic year during which time his first-author abstract was selected to be part of the 2022 American Society of Nephrology (ASN) kidney week conference. He is interested in acute care medicine, public health, medical anthropology, and linguistics.
Arunima Mariya Jose
Arunima was born and raised in Kerala, India. She graduated from Sree Gokulam Medical College in 2020. She worked with Dr. Gupta from 2021-22 as a Postdoctoral Research Trainee at BWH/DFCI, helping with studies related to cisplatin-associated acute kidney injury. Arunima is currently completing her residency at Florida State University College of Medicine, Cape Coral Hospital for Internal Medicine.
